Pinterest AI and you
Behind the scenes
Pinterest has used artificial intelligence (AI) from the start to help people find inspiration to create a life they love. This can show up in a variety of ways, including displaying recommendations, improving content moderation and increasing inclusive representation. Now, we’re thoughtfully exploring Generative AI technology.
The latest
Generative AI (GenAI) is part of Pinterest tools and features that drive innovation and creativity. Getting to know Pinterest’s AI features can help people better understand, customize and enhance their experience. For creators, this means seeing how the technology is helping shape how people discover and engage with content on the platform.
Understanding your experience
GenAI label
What it is: AI labels help people on Pinterest see when an image may have been modified or generated with AI. These labels are applied by analyzing the image’s metadata or using classifiers to automatically detect potential GenAI content.
What this means for you: These labels are designed to let you know when AI may have been used. They give you more context about the content in your feed.
Where to find it:
Tap on an image Pin and you’ll see an “AI modified” label at the bottom left corner in closeup. As these visual classifiers continue to improve, the labels will become even more helpful and accurate.
If you believe your content may be mislabeled, you can appeal your label to have it reviewed.

Customize your experience
GenAI content controls
What it is: A tool that gives you more control over what you see on Pinterest by letting you adjust the amount of AI content in your feeds. You can find the full list of categories in your Pinterest settings, and stay tuned for future additions.
What this means for you: You can use this tool to see less GenAI content on eligible image Pins in certain categories that are highly prone to AI modification or generation, like beauty, art, fashion and home decor. The result: You can see more of the content you want and less of what you don’t.
Where to find it:
Manage preferences in “Settings” by visiting “refine your recommendations.”
Toggle categories on or off to see fewer AI-generated images in each supported category.
You can also tap the three-dot menu on the bottom right of an eligible image Pin and select “See less AI Pins”.
If you change your mind, you can adjust your selections at any time.

Enhance your experience
Pinterest Assistant
What it is: Pinterest Assistant is an AI-powered tool that helps people on Pinterest find inspiration by surfacing recommendations for everything from refreshing a living room to planning a trip or updating a skincare routine.
What this means for you: Finding the “right” thing can be hard when you’re not sure where to start. Get suggestions and ideas to help you take the next step.
How to use it: Pinterest Assistant is currently in beta to US users 18 and over on iPhone devices, with wider availability planned.

Visual search
What it is: Searching on Pinterest has always been visual. Visual search uses a set of AI-powered search features that helps you discover more ideas through images. When you tap on a Pin or upload a photo, Pinterest analyzes what’s in the image and any written descriptions, and generates behind-the-scenes descriptions (think: “linen blazer,” or “minimalist living room”) to help pull out the most relevant ideas and products. Then, shows you results similar to or inspired by the original image.
What this means for you: When people tap into images to find “more like this,” it provides opportunities for new audiences to discover your Pins (and tagged products). Plus, when Pinterest’s AI can understand what’s in an image and generate rich keywords and refinements, like style, color and occasion, it can help those Pins appear in relevant results more often.
How to use it:
Tap the magnifying glass icon on the bottom right of a Pin or upload your own photo, then click or zoom in on the part you care about—a jacket, tile pattern or full scene.
Pinterest will find similar items, related styles and shoppable options that fit what’s in the image, so you can explore variations, compare options and save or shop the ones you love.

FAQ
In addition to analyzing an image’s metadata, Pinterest has developed classifiers that automatically detect GenAI content, even if the content doesn’t have obvious markers—and we are always working to improve those classifiers for greater accuracy.
Ongoing work focuses on helping to make sure Pinterest systems detect any content, regardless of how it was created, that is not inspirational and actionable for people on the platform, and additional experiments are rolling out to address related concerns.
Pins that receive an “AI modified” label are image Pins that Pinterest systems detect may have been generated or modified using GenAI. To do this, Pinterest analyzes an image’s metadata and uses classifiers that automatically detect GenAI content, even if the content doesn’t have obvious markers.
As these classifiers are refined, labels should become even more helpful and accurate. However, these systems aren’t perfect. That’s why there is an appeals system for creators and people on Pinterest who believe that their content may be mislabeled.

We work to ensure our systems detect any content that is not inspirational, actionable or relevant to people on Pinterest, regardless of how it was created.
This is addressed in several ways, including upgrades to Pinterest's systems to detect and limit non-inspirational or spammy content so that high-quality, actionable content is what gets prioritized in distribution and search.
Pinterest’s algorithms prioritize content that is inspirational, actionable and most relevant to each person. However, because GenAI is still new and constantly evolving, the industry is still learning how to detect this content, along with where and when people find it valuable.
