Everything you need to know about the new Pin update

August 25, 2023Anthony Di Feo

Pins are the core of Pinterest. And over the years, the flexible content format for showcasing your inspiring, actionable ideas has evolved to embrace the changing needs of creators and people on Pinterest (looking at you, Idea Pins).

Now, we’re streamlining the content creation process to make it even easier and more rewarding, by bringing the best of standard Pins and Idea Pins together in a single powerhouse Pin format.

Will you still have access to the features that you’ve been using up to now? Absolutely. Will any of the features that you know and love be going away? Nope. (TLDR: You’re actually gaining more.) In fact, whether you’re a creator who’s more familiar with multimedia Idea Pins or a creator who prefers standard Pins (as in image Pins or video Pins), you’ll find all your favourite features rolled into one Pin format. And best of all, since images and videos are both shared evenly on Pinterest, you can focus more on the content of your Pin without needing to choose between two Pin formats.

What the updated Pin format looks like

From the moment you press that ‘+’ sign button to create, you’ll see that there’s only one Pin option on mobile (instead of the two options as before) and on your desktop browser, a single ‘Create Pin’ option can be found under the organic heading. And that Pin can be used to create and save images, videos or a mix of both.

The finishing touches page got a refresh as well, to pack in features that were previously only available to standard Pins, such as adding external links, which is now available for the updated Pin.

And there are even more ways to get creative—and create engagement. Editing tools, which allow you to add personality with music and stickers, were once limited to Idea Pins. With the new Pin format, you’ll have access to the editing tools whether you’re creating a Pin with images or videos or both.

All glowed up

We’re always looking for ways to enhance your creation experience. And with a simpler, faster way to create, here’s how some favourite features from previous Pin formats stack up against the updated Pin.

In with the new (and old)

While the new Pin format unlocks more possibilities for your content, some tried-and-tested things remain. First up, the best practices that you’ve been diligently following to create Pins still apply. Think about adding keywords and topic tags to help people find your content more easily, and save to relevant boards to provide more context for your Pin. This way, your content will be optimised to reach Pinners who are looking to find and act on your great ideas.

As for the Pins that you’ve previously created, whether they're image Pins, video Pins or Idea Pins?  Your existing Pins won’t be impacted by the update, so you can even keep creating them—for a limited time. The new Pin format will be rolling out to all creators over the next few months. So keep an eye out for when your update lands.
